“From the Cradle to the Stage” Skylah Jones is an Australian Singer-Song Writer, Musician, Composer and Performer.
Considered Avant-garde, an ever-changing chameleon with artistic expression made evident in her creative melodious writings and somewhat theatrical epics. Skylah’s music paints a canvas and brands her own distinctive sound with a quirky and eccentric delivery.
A seasoned and passionate performer Skylah is charismatic and soulful, and her love of poetry is evident in the lyrical content of her music.
As a 4 year old child, Skylah Jones had already begun her life long journey in music when her mother a musician, recognized her talent and abilities developing then with her already ‘ear’ for music.
At 8, Skylah began taking piano lessons and was completely intoxicated and besotted by the instrument, day and night practicing hours and hours at her craft.
She had found her best friend in music however her parents had to place a curfew on her tireless dedication “no piano before 7 am” they requested as she just couldn’t leave it alone as her insatiable appetite for music was only just beginning…
Studying her roots in classical music, the foundation was being built and her teacher back then branded her “little Beethoven” stating that she could do things on piano that even she was unable to do. Skylah began composing and singing, and wrote her first song at 10 and in that same year scored her first gig playing classical music for the local ballet classes.
However, Skylah was drawn to the influences of ragtime Queen Winafred Atwell and the like introduced by her mother, now discovering a new love in that of honky-tonk piano birthed a new style of carving up the keys where she entered a talent quest and won first place with her rendition of the “Black and White Rag” at the age of 12.
At the tender age of 14 whilst attending a Catholic all girls school, Skylah discovered the ‘blues’ and began gigging Friday and Saturday nights at a busy wine bar on the Gold Coast. Word got around and quickly Skylah was packing the venue with curious customers and a fascinated audience that would come from everywhere just to see this kid play.
At 15, she began doing session work in a local recording studio in exchange for recording time to lay down her original songs. The taste for the studio just spurred on her passion and desire to record, write and compose all the more.
Today as an international artist, Skylah Jones has performed in many parts of the world bringing her unique style and versatility to her audience. As a full-time musician Skylah’s side gig is imparting her wealth of knowledge and expertise to her students as she mentors and coaches vocal classes and teaches piano.
A writer, composer, arranger, poet and performer she writes from the soul and is passionate about social issues and current events in society. “If you are going to sing, sing with a broken heart, make it meaningful and moving… and when you play, play each note with conviction be light on you’re fingers as a ballerina is on her toes…”
